Now this is more like it. After two studio albums of Hunter/Mott/British Lions covers, we get a live album/DVD to show us what the Down n Outz are like in the flesh. We've had a live DVD before - Live At the Hammersmith Odeon captured their set when they opened for Mott The Hoople in 2009. It's OK, but the crowd were subdued (we were saving ourselves for the headliners) and as such it lost that little bit of something that lifts live documents from OK to good to excellent.
No such worries here. The opening track is the only non-Hunter/Mott/Lions track here, a faithful cover of Elton John's Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (one of the best set-openers by any band, anywhere). The rest is one long celebration of what a great band Mott The Hoople and its offshoots were. The arrangements are familiar enough (they don't need changing), and Joe Elliott alternates between piano and rhythm guitar with ease (didn't know he could play, did ya?) The crowd are up for it as well and are obviously Mott/Hunter fans - there's a girl near the front who's singing along to every song. No bunch of Leppard fans, these.
All too soon the disc is over, although in truth at 100 minutes it is probably the 'right' length. You don't want too much of a good thing, after all. The bonus tracks on the DVD are good fun as well... Joe drinking alone in a bar and having a few too many rum & cokes before a large man asks him to leave - hilarious!
The band are having fun, the crowd are having a ball - what's not to like? I wish I'd been there, I really do.
