Review

This archive set dates from 1981, and was staged to assist Rick Derringer, who had recently suffered the theft of all his equipment (he was between labels, and wasn't insured). King Biscuit recorded and broadcast the show, which is now released commercially with the addition of tracks not broadcast at the time.

Rick turns in a fine set, delivering a hard rock show that will appeal to any fan of the genre. Opening track Guitars and Women shows that he really means business, while a lengthy Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo allows everyone to get the air guitars out to a lengthy workout.

The surprises, however, are reserved for the encores, where Rick is joined on stage by Ian Hunter, who delivers a great version of Just Another Night. Not technically perfect by any means (this isn't Ian's regular band, after all) but still enjoyable none the less. Ian then delivers the knockout blow with a medley of All The Young Dudes, Roll Away The Stone and Ships. Quite simply, brilliant.

Rick is then joined on stage by everyone for a rousing version of the old standard Hang On Sloopy, bringing the set to a fabulous finish.

The booklet gives a little background to reasons for the gig. However, the venue isn't given (it was The Palladium, in New York City) and the date is given as 1983 (it was actually 13th September 1981) but these are only minor niggles.

This is a great live CD, that will appeal not just to fans of Rick Derringer and Ian Hunter, but also to the casual rock fan. Recommended.
