Mott The Hoople track finder

Introduction

This is a complete cross-reference of every official track Mott The Hoople have released. I list the original album the track was issued on, together with all compilations and various live versions. Where more than one live version exists, this is noted. Where different (studio) mixes exist, this is noted too.

Please note that not all albums listed are currently available. Some may be deleted, others may not even have been issued on CD, and for others some tracks may only have been available on the vinyl version. For assessments on sound quality, please see the individual album reviews.

Note also that I have not included unofficial recordings in this list - official releases only!

Whiskey Women (live 30th December 1971) 4:22 This live version (recorded BBC Paris Theatre, London England) is on Original Mixed-Up Kids and the Mental Train box set.
Whizz Kid 3:26 Originally issued on Mott. The original vinyl had both a 'moan' at the start and a false ending followed by an instrumental coda which fades out. Finding the full version is surprisingly tricky, as due to mastering errors either or both the 'moan' and coda can be missing. The 2006 CD has the full version with both the 'moan' and the coda. The full version can also be found on The (MTH) Collection, The Essential Mott The Hoople, Gold, The Golden Age of Rock n Roll, The Journey and Ballad of Mott - A Retrospective. The original CD (on Castle) omits both the 'moan' and the coda (OK, the coda is at the start of Hymn For The Dudes). The 1998 CD has the coda but still omits the 'moan'. The version on Roll Away The Stone - The Best Of has the 'moan' but omits the coda.
Whole Lotta Shakin' (live 14th December 1973)) (15:59) This live version (recorded Hammersmith Odeon, London England) was part of the rock medley, originally issued on Live.
Wrath And Wroll 1:38 Originally issued on Mott The Hoople, it can also be found on the Mental Train box set. The version on the "mispress" of the original LP was 1:56 in length and included a few bars of God Save The Queen at the end. The version on All The Young Dudes - The Anthology is the same take as the 1st album (albeit a remix), but with a different starting place. It fades in at the 38s mark on the "regular" (1st album) version. The "regular" version fades out at the 58s mark on the Anthology version. See also You Really Got Me/Wrath And Wroll (crossfade).
The Wreck of the Liberty Belle 6:15 This outtake from the Mad Shadows sessions can be found on Live Fillmore West.
Wrong Side of the River 5:19 Originally issued on Wildlife, it can also be found on the Mental Train box set.
You Are One Of Us 2:25 Originally issued on Mad Shadows, it can also be found on the Mental Train box set.
You Are One Of Us (take 9) 5:15 A much longer full (and different) take can be found on the Mental Train box set.
You Really Got Me 2:55 This instrumental was originally issued on Mott The Hoople. It can also be found on the Mental Train box set, and on the compilations The Essential Mott The Hoople, Rock and Roll Queen and Pop Chronik. The version on the "mispress" of the first album is about 7s longer - Ian Hunter's piano is clearly audible during the last few seconds.
You Really Got Me (vocal) 3:07 A rare version with Mick Ralphs' vocals was originally issued on Two Miles From Heaven. The version on All The Young Dudes - The Anthology is shorter at 2:43 due to an early fade-out and it being morphed with Wrath And Wroll.
You Really Got Me (live 9-12th July 1970) 5:03 This live version (recorded at Fillmore West, San Francisco CA) can be found on Live Fillmore West.
You Really Got Me (live 13th September 1970) 8:55 This live version (recorded Fairfield Halls, Croydon England) is on Fairfield Halls Live 1970 and the In Performance box set.
You Really Got Me (live 13th September 1970) (2018 mix) 8:55 This live version (recorded Fairfield Halls, Croydon England) is on the Mental Train box set. It has a much narrower stereo mix than the previous release.
You Really Got Me/Death May Be Your Santa Claus (4:19) This medley of You Really Got Me and Death May be Your Santa Claus can be found on Live 2013.
You Really Got Me/Wrath And Wroll (Crossfade) 3:57 An interesting version of the regular album track cross-faded with Wrath And Wroll can be found on The Best of Mott The Hoople - The Island Years 1969-1972 and Walkin' With a Mountain. Both discs call the track ...Crossfads, which surely is a typo?
Your Own Backyard 4:13 Originally issued on Brain Capers, it can also be found on the Mental Train box set and on the compilations Walkin' With a Mountain and The Best of Mott The Hoople - The Island Years 1969-1972.
Your Own Backyard (complete take) 4:13 The 'complete take' of this track can be found on the Mental Train box set. It has a spoken 'one, two...' intro, but (to my ears) sounds the same as the regular version.
Your Own Backyard (live 30th December 1971) 4:51 This live version (recorded BBC Paris Theatre, London England) was issued on Original Mixed-Up Kids and the Mental Train box set.

A note about track lengths: track lengths vary between different CDs due to different mastering techniques. This is especially the case with live recordings. Some compilations include spoken introductions, some exclude them and in some cases they may appear at the end of the preceeding track. The same recording can vary in length by a minute or more depending on how much dead time, introductions, applause, etc is included. In these cases I have tended to use the length of the recording when it first appeared. Brackets indicate that the track (usually a live performance) is part of a medley.

A note about timings for the first album "mispress". I do not have a copy of this LP, but I do have a tape dub of it, and a CDR (probably sourced from the same tape). This tape/CDR seems to play slow, so I ripped it to the hard drive and then adjusted the speed using Adobe Audition. The chords at the start of You Really Got Me are quite precise, so I compared against a known good example and adjusted the speed of the "mispress" accordingly (a speed-up of about 4% was required).

There are several albums called All The Young Dudes. There is the original 1972 album (and CD issues of the same); a 1-CD and 2-CD compilation of previously-issued live material (licensed from Angel Air) and the 3-CD Sony box set from 1998. Hopefully my listings above are clear enough. There are also several compilations called The Collection. There is a 2-LP/1-CD compilation (on Castle) of CBS-era Mott The Hoople, MOTT and Ian Hunter (which I have listed as 'The Collection'), and a more recent CD of CBS-era Mott The Hoople and MOTT (which I have listed as 'The (MTH) Collection'). There is also a CD of Chrysalis-era Ian Hunter (1979-81) which shouldn't feature in this list (as there is no Mott The Hoople content). Again, hopefully my listing should be clear enough.

I am indebted to Mick McLaughlin for pointing out the two different takes of Rock 'n' Roll Queen from Croydon, the narrower stereo mix on the Croydon tracks on Mental Train, and the differences between the "regular" and "Anthology" versions of Wrath and Wroll.
